Judy Stein Establishes Endowed Scholarship to Assist Tomorrow’s Foresters
A scholarship enabled Judy Stein ’87 to earn her Lake Forest College degree. That’s why she has established an endowed scholarship to support future students with financial need at her alma mater.
“I was a single mother of two when I transferred to Lake Forest College in my junior year. Lake Forest provided a helping hand to me at a critical juncture in my life,” Judy says. “Without this assistance, I would never have been able to finish college. I want my scholarship to provide help and support to other students down the line.”
After graduating magna cum laude and later earning her law degree, Judy started her law career clerking in Illinois’ Appellate and Supreme Courts before serving as in-house counsel for several major corporations. Now retired, she and her husband Lou reside in Phoenix where they have chosen to focus their philanthropy on the institutions that have meant so much in their lives.
“When Lou and I looked at our plans, we decided to really make a big impact with our gifts by focusing on our two alma maters instead of dividing our gifts among several organizations,” Judy says.
Judy remembers her first visit to the College and the deep connection she felt. Over the years, she has kept that connection strong by mentoring students and enjoying the satisfaction of seeing them enter successful careers—something her scholarship will continue.
Judy urges fellow alumni to remember Lake Forest College in their estate plans.
“Lake Forest College is going to be here for a long time,” Judy says. “People are going to need a liberal arts education now more than ever to think critically and ask the right questions.”
