Steve Logowitz ’70 Makes Unrestricted Gift of Charitable Remainder Trust

Stephen Logowitz ’70 grew up in Providence, Rhode Island, and always planned to attend an Eastern college. When he decided to look at a wider list of small, co-ed schools, he learned about Lake Forest. “I came out to visit the campus and loved it,” he says. “I thought it would be an adventure to attend a school in the Midwest.”
After graduating with a degree in American Studies, Steve earned his MFA from the Yale School of Art & Architecture in 1973 and enjoyed a 40-year career as a graphic designer. In gratitude for his LFC education, Steve and his wife of 38 years, Dorothea Black, are giving back to the College with a charitable remainder unitrust funded with highly appreciated equities and bonds.
“It allowed us to put money aside during our lifetime, which we could then decide to allocate as we got older.” Steve says. “Putting charitable funds (composed of appreciated securities) into a trust, which itself generates annual interest, enabled us to fund such things as long-term care premiums for policies designed to protect us in later life.”
Steve’s appreciation for the value of a liberal arts education has remained with him throughout his adult life. “Having attended a small college, I had the chance to explore interests and things I may not have had the same opportunity to do at a larger school,” he says. “In a small college environment, everything is essentially open to you.”
Steve hopes others will be inspired to leave their legacies and support the longevity of Lake Forest College. “I feel that my experience was a positive and worthwhile one, and I remain indebted,” Steve concludes. “If you were fortunate enough to attend a college like LFC and you profited from the experience, why not pay it forward?”
